Four Corners and a Collie: Escaping Anxiety

Every week at the table, we dump out the chaos of our regular lives and look for a place for our minds to land. We start exactly where you'd expect: finding the boundaries within the four corners. Welcome to this week's entry.

The Overwhelm

There is nothing quite like health anxiety to lock your brain into a terrifying, exhausting loop. When you’re staring at an incision from a few months ago, playing doctor in your own head, the questions don’t stop.  It’s a constant, draining mental hamster wheel of trying to diagnose yourself on a loop, and it completely hijacks your day.

The Escape

If I could have any design instantly materialize on my table right now to break this panic cycle, it would be the Border Collie puzzle—the one where he's sitting by the sea with a guitar. Honestly, I just need a serious shift in atmosphere right now. It looks incredibly relaxing, but more importantly, it’s just kind of comical. You can’t look at that goofy dog face and not smile. When my brain is spiraling over worst-case health scenarios, man’s best friend feels like the exact antidote I need to lighten the heavy air in the room.

The Focus

When I picture myself putting that specific design together, I'd focus entirely on my go-to strategy: completely separating the edges from the inner pieces. There’s something incredibly grounded about that process. I’d focus on the tactile routine of hunting down those outer edges first. In a moment where everything feels uncertain and out of my hands, organizing those pieces and building the physical border provides an immediate sense of order and control.

The Reset

At the end of 20 minutes, I want to step away from the table, look at that progress, and just tell my brain to STOP. I want a purposeful reset that allows me to stop worrying about things I cannot change in this exact second. A 20-minute boundary with this puzzle is a reminder to let the doctors do their work and leave it to the professionals. It’s a small win that lets me breathe again, stepping back into my day with a bit of distance from the panic.
